Friend to a person with an intellectual disability - Dunedin Friend-Link
Organisation
Dunedin Friend-Link
Summary
Would you like to make a big difference to someone with an intellectual disability? Dunedin Friend-Link supports people with intellectual/learning disabilities to participate, contribute and belong to the Dunedin community.
Description
Dunedin Friend-Link supports people with intellectual/learning disabilities to participate, contribute and belong to the Dunedin community. They work together with people to identify what would make life more enjoyable and support them to fill the gaps through friendship, group membership or even helping them to pursue a dream.
You can be matched with a specific friend or come along to help out in a group setting - or both! Some of the ways you can get involved are:
Spending time socialising at their Office/Hub space in South Dunedin
Helping with a group activity e.g. singing, sports or craft group
Enjoying a shared interest together e.g. walking, live music or video games
Having regular meals together with a matched friend
Driving a matched friend on outings or to and from appointments (mileage reimbursement available)
Organising activities of mutual interest with a matched friend e.g. going for a walk on weekends
Support and training specific to your role will be provided by Friend-link.
Requirements
You believe in the rights of everyone to be shown dignity and respect.
You'll enjoy getting to know someone new and will take pleasure in developing reciprocal friendship.
Knowledge of the challenges faced by people with disabilities is helpful, but not essential. Many friends have no previous involvement with people with disabilities and learn while volunteering.
Time commitment
Times are negotiated between friends, or in the case of supporting a group, with the Friend-link office.
These are flexible and will depend on the arrangement. You might expect to commit a couple of hours per month.
Background check
Police check required - Vulnerable Adult
