Straight Up Trust

Purpose

Straight Up Trust want to create a safe, non-judgemental relational space where young people feel loved and accepted, and are able to explore life values and grow.

Description

The Straight Up Trust is a charitable non-profit organisation based in South Dunedin and Brockville. They have been working with youth and families in the southern areas of Dunedin for over 20 years.

Their aproach is to:

  • Be Youth Focused

  • Run Youth Clubs that are fun (Sports, Camps, Small Groups)

  • Use Mentoring and Role Modelling

  • Build relationships

  • Walk alongside a young person

  • Build connections that are developed over time through trust

Use your skills and experience to:

  • Help to run various fun activities & games (activity based learning - games with a point)

  • Build relationships with the young people

  • If possible, appropriate & approved, build a mentoring-type relationship with a young person

  • There is also the opportunity to participate in 3 weekend camps per year

Volunteers can feel good in knowing that they are using their skills and talents to help build stronger communities by supporting youth. Through this activity you will be a catalyst for transformational change. So get involved with Straight Up Trust!

  • Complete initial 2hr Induction Training

  • Interpersonal Skills and Empathy

  • Ability to relate well and enjoy working with young people/teens

  • Fun loving with a sense of humour

  • Having your own legal roadworthy transport is a big advantage (WoF, Reg, Insurance)
(They can arrange a car-pool & pick ups from the Uni for volunteers though, as many of their volunteers are uni students)

  • Attend ongoing supervision provided by the part-time youth workers through briefs & de-briefs before & after the program

  • It would also be a big plus if you're able to participate in the weekend camps (held up to 3 times a year) aswell

The Straight Up Trust is Christian organisation that operates from a Christian values base, so you'd need to be happy to work in that framework & context.

  • Three hours once a week (Inclusive of about 2hrs for initial Induction/Training)

  • Ongoing support from experienced staff is provided

  • You can choose to participate on either a Monday or Wednesday evening from 6.00 to 9.00pm (dinner is provided on Wednesdays)
