Purpose

Join Stitch Kitchen’s creative community as a Retail Assistant. Help with fabric and haberdashery sales, keep the studio welcoming, and enjoy access to sewing space and discounts while supporting local reuse and sustainability.

Description

Stitch Kitchen is a community sewing studio in Dunedin dedicated to creative reuse, sustainability, and skill sharing. Through workshops, community projects, and a fabric reuse store, they support people to sew, mend, and create in ways that care for our planet.

Stitch Kitchen receives donated materials from the community which are sold through the studio to help cover the costs of community projects.
They are seeking volunteer Retail Assistants to help extend open hours , making it easier for the public to access resources and buy materials for a wide range of creative projects.

Retail Assistants will:

  • Welcome customers and assist with fabric and haberdashery sales.

  • Advise customers on fabric choices and, at times, provide troubleshooting support with sewing projects.

  • Help maintain a tidy, well-presented studio space.

  • Handle cash, and keep basic records.

In return, Retail Assistants have full use of the sewing studio between customers, access to studio equipment, and discounts on fabric stock for their own creative projects. Volunteering with Stitch Kitchen offers people a chance to learn new skills, meet others, and contribute to a more sustainable, creative community.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of sewing and fabric crafts, to be able to advise customers on their choice of materials.

  • Warm, friendly and welcoming to a diverse range of customers.

  • Attention to detail to keep the studio well presented and ready for our wide range of users.

  • Confidence with computers (including spreadsheets) and cash handling experience.

  • Reliability and ability to work solo, with support from our off-site staff.

  • Referees will be checked.

Time commitment

4hrs/week from early October till mid December. They are happy to be flexible.
