Support/Liaison Volunteer
Organisation
Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)
Purpose
To offer free online reading, writing, and spelling lessons primarily to rural and isolated youth and adults who lack access to a Literacy Centre in towns or cities. Additionally, it can assist anyone across New Zealand who seeks one-on-one coaching.
Description
Become a Support/Liaison Volunteer for Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)!
Love literacy but can’t commit weekly? This role takes just two weeks each term, at times that suit you. You can help once or keep going.
What You’ll Do:
Get a list of 5-6 names and work with a volunteer buddy.
One buddy calls during the day (8am–3pm), the other in early evening (3–7pm).
Message each other about who you've reached and who’s hard to contact.
Use a free phone app we provide so calls don’t cost you and your number stays private.
Attend a Zoom training before starting (recorded for later).
About Our Students:
Ages 14 to 65, with different literacy levels—from learning the alphabet to essay writing.
They lack everyday life reading and writing skills.
Come from many backgrounds and life situations.
Requirements
Be friendly, patient, like helping others, and able to follow a script while filling out a spreadsheet.
Have basic tech skills to use Slack, the phone app, and spreadsheets (tech help available).
Make several calls daily over two weeks.
Reliable and able to commit
Doing this every term is great, but once is also appreciated.
Time commitment
Two weeks once every term, either during the day (Between 8/9am to 3pm) or evenings (3-5pm or 5-7pm.)
Background Check
Police Check - working with youth and vulnerable adults
