Purpose

Presbyterian Support Otago works for a fair, just and caring community. Motivated by their Christian heritage, and in partnership with others, PSO works across the generations for positive change, strong families and healthy communities.

Description

Stepping Stones and Club Eliven are mental health and wellbeing community group programmes. Run by Presbyterian Support Otago's Family Works and Enliven Services at the old Forbury School on Oxford Street, South Dunedin.

The shared outdoor garden area is ready to be tackled by a keen volunteer that is friendly, reliable and happy to have the help of group members that use the space. This would be suitable for a couple of friends to do together.

🌱 Gardening can help decrease anxiety levels and lessen stress, research shows that people who are more connected with nature are usually happier and report feeling their lives are worthwhile. Just one of the many benefits to the volunteer and group helpers.

What You'll Do:

  • Planting, watering, and maintaining plants.

  • Helping with seasonal tasks such as pruning, weeding, and mulching.

  • Engaging with group members who attend the services.

  • Working as part of a team to create a positive and welcoming space for all.

  • Building community relationships.

  • Share knowledge and teach skills.

  • Promoting the benefits of nature and improving the environment.

Why volunteer:

  • Make a meaningful impact in your community with like minded volunteers and community members.

  • Gain practical gardening experience.

  • Enjoy the outdoors and the therapeutic benefits of gardening.

  • Create a space that will be enjoyed by others.

  • Contribute to a meaningful cause and make a real impact on the community.

Please note:

  • Equipment provided.

  • Volunteers will receive appropriate training and supervision for the role.

  • Volunteers will be required to sign a Code of Conduct

Requirements

Ideally you are someone who is:

  • Friendly, reliable and able to work as part of a team.

  • Approachable and open minded.

  • Ability to perform light physical tasks such as bending, raking, sweeping.

  • Good balance and able to walk around uneven surfaces.

  • No previous gardening experience required, though it is a plus!

Time commitment

This opportunity is anticipated to be 1-3 hours per week with less time required in winter. There is flexible access to the space and tasks could be completed at any time.

However, ideally volunteer work would be done during opening hours with the aim of teaching and encouraging group members. Weather and season will also affect hours.
