Recreate NZ

Description

Recreate is a not-for-profit organisation that provides life changing experiences for people with disabilities aged 10 - 45 across New Zealand. We operate out of 7 regions, with their newest being Dunedin!

They run group-based programmes that fall under social, recreational, adventure, and educational categories. This could look like a social Friday night getting dinner and going to the movies, an adventure day white water rafting, a fun weekend away in an Airbnb, or learning how to prepare for your first job.

Volunteers are a critical part of the organisation and provide support, expertise, and friendship to our community. As a volunteer at Recreate, your responsibility on our programmes will encompass a very broad range of tasks. In very general terms, they would like you to encourage the young people to try each activity, facilitate their success, encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and others, and to have a good time!

The most important part of your role is to be a friend. They highly value your input and see you as a fellow co-leader in helping them deliver a successful and safe programme. It is their aim to provide you with a safe, fulfilling and positive volunteering experience. A space where you can develop your people skills, learn more about diversity and disability, meet some incredible people, and of course have heaps of fun! Feel free to check out their website and Instagram for volunteer feedback and a look into programmes! https://www.recreate.org.nz/volunteer @recreate_nz

Requirements

No essential requirements, just the willingness to support and uplift tāngata whaikaha.

Ideally you are patient, open-minded, a positive role model, and down to have some fun! Previous experience working with young people or people with disabilities is wonderful, but they warmly welcome all volunteers.

Note: They focus on peer-appropriate support, which means most of their volunteers are between 15-35yrs old, however if you are 35+ and interested they still encourage you to get in touch.

Time commitment

  • Time commitment is very flexible due to the nature of the programmes. Only free for 4 hours on one Sunday? Great! Free for a whole weekend or every Tuesday for 8 weeks? Also great!

  • There is no minimum requirement, so you can come along as often or as little as you like.

Location

Various, depends on the activity.

Background Check

Police check required as role is working with vulnerable children and adults
