Purpose

Do you love getting out on your bike? You can make it possible for someone with blind/low vision to enjoy cycling outdoors by being a Pilot rider on the front of a tandem bike!

Description

Blind Low Vision are New Zealand’s leading provider of vision rehabilitation, providing practical and emotional support for people with vision loss. Their vision rehabilitation services are personalized to meet individual needs and goals, however big or small.

They are looking to increase the number of tandem pilots in Dunedin. As a pilot you will:

  • Support the member in their riding

  • Share your love of riding and engage with your companion

  • Be ‘the eyes’ of the tandem – at the front steering, enjoying the wind

  • Keep the low vision rider informed of what’s going on around you

  • Help with bike maintenance

  • Connect with someone new in the community

  • Feel wonderful about supporting your community in a unique way

  • Learn new skills and keep fit while making a difference

There will be a full induction as well as an in-person human guiding training and Tandem Bike training. You will have the support of the Community and Volunteer Coordinator throughout your volunteering experience.

Requirements

This role would suit someone who is:

  • Keen for a ride or two per week

  • Enjoys conversation and meeting new people

  • Friendly and patient

  • Open to new learning

  • Understanding of the individual's social challenges

  • Familiar with basic bike maintenance (sorting out chains, tyres)

Interview/Application Process

  • Please provide two referees.

Time Commitment

Volunteers should be available to ride once a week. The timing is reasonably flexible.

Induction Process:

  • Online induction 1-2 hours (can be completed over a period of time)

  • Human Guiding (in-person) 1 hour

  • Tandem Bike Training 30 mins
