Purpose
Do you love getting out on your bike? You can make it possible for someone with blind/low vision to enjoy cycling outdoors by being a Pilot rider on the front of a tandem bike!
Description
Blind Low Vision are New Zealand’s leading provider of vision rehabilitation, providing practical and emotional support for people with vision loss. Their vision rehabilitation services are personalized to meet individual needs and goals, however big or small.
They are looking to increase the number of tandem pilots in Dunedin. As a pilot you will:
Support the member in their riding
Share your love of riding and engage with your companion
Be ‘the eyes’ of the tandem – at the front steering, enjoying the wind
Keep the low vision rider informed of what’s going on around you
Help with bike maintenance
Connect with someone new in the community
Feel wonderful about supporting your community in a unique way
Learn new skills and keep fit while making a difference
There will be a full induction as well as an in-person human guiding training and Tandem Bike training. You will have the support of the Community and Volunteer Coordinator throughout your volunteering experience.
Requirements
This role would suit someone who is:
Keen for a ride or two per week
Enjoys conversation and meeting new people
Friendly and patient
Open to new learning
Understanding of the individual's social challenges
Familiar with basic bike maintenance (sorting out chains, tyres)
Interview/Application Process
Please provide two referees.
Time Commitment
Volunteers should be available to ride once a week. The timing is reasonably flexible.
Induction Process:
Online induction 1-2 hours (can be completed over a period of time)
Human Guiding (in-person) 1 hour
Tandem Bike Training 30 mins
