Wild Dunedin Nature Festival

Description

Ōtepoti Mohoao Wild Dunedin, NZ Festival of Nature showcases all that makes Ōtepoti Dunedin the wildlife capital of New Zealand.

Wild Ride is a unique, self-guided cycling experience along Te Aka Ōtākou | The Otago Harbour shared pathway, connecting Port Chalmers and Portobello. Participants can choose their own start and finish points, with a ferry running throughout the day to help them explore the full route. Along the way, cyclists can enjoy rich Kāi Tahu storytelling at Tohu Whenua sites, hear insights from scientists, experience a roaming puppet show, and take part in interactive activity stations—making it a fun, educational, and immersive journey.

Volunteers are stationed at one of 10 passport checkpoints located at Tohu Whenua sites along the trail. Their role includes:

  • Welcoming and encouraging cyclists.

  • Stamping Wild Ride passports.

  • Sharing helpful information about activities and the event.

  • Helping to create a positive and engaging atmosphere at each stop along the route.

Volunteers play a crucial part in bringing the event to life, helping guide participants through the experience and ensuring each stop is welcoming and well-organised. Their interactions enhance the overall journey, encouraging cyclists to engage more deeply with the stories, science, and activities.

Volunteers enjoy being part of a vibrant outdoor event while spending time in a beautiful harbour setting. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, build communication skills, and gain event experience in a relaxed, supportive environment. Most importantly, volunteers contribute to a meaningful community event that celebrates nature, culture, and connection.

An induction and Health and Safety email will be sent out to volunteers and a full briefing given before your shift.
