Wild Dunedin Nature Festival

Description

Ōtepoti Mohoao Wild Dunedin, NZ Festival of Nature showcases all that makes Ōtepoti Dunedin the wildlife capital of New Zealand.

The Wild Night Masquerade Gala and Charity Auction, held at Tūhura Otago Museum, is a vibrant and memorable evening featuring live music, creative costumes, and a lively auction atmosphere — all in support of environmental awareness and community engagement.

Volunteers play a vital role in delivering a seamless and enjoyable event. Responsibilities include greeting and checking in guests, directing attendees to VIP and auction areas, serving canapés, and providing general support throughout the evening. Volunteers also assist with pack-down at the end of the event, helping restore the venue after the festivities.

Impact of the role:
By supporting this event, volunteers contribute directly to its success and to the wider goals of raising awareness and funds for environmental initiatives. Their presence helps create a welcoming, organised, and high-quality experience for guests, which is essential for encouraging ongoing support and engagement.

Volunteers gain valuable experience in event support, customer service, and teamwork within a unique and lively setting. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, build confidence, and be part of a special evening at one of Dunedin’s key cultural venues. Most importantly, volunteers can feel proud knowing they’ve contributed to a meaningful event that supports both the community and the environment.

An induction and Health and Safety email will be sent out to volunteers and a full briefing given before your shift.

Requirements

  • Friendly, confident, and well-presented, as they will be interacting closely with guests in a lively, semi-formal setting.

  • A positive, can-do attitude is essential, along with strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to engage with a wide range of attendees.

  • Reliable, proactive, and able to stay calm and professional in a busy environment.

  • Confidence and a polite, approachable manner are especially important when assisting in VIP or auction spaces.

  • Comfortable checking tickets, giving directions, and supporting event flow.

  • Those assisting with canapés should be attentive and able to move carefully through crowds.

  • Being physically able to stand for extended periods and help with pack-down tasks is also important.

  • At least 18 years old, given the nature of the evening event and responsibilities involved.

No specific experience is required, but previous involvement in events, hospitality, or customer service is an advantage. Ultimately, a positive attitude, willingness to help, and ability to work as part of a team are the most important qualities.
