Social Impact Studio, University of Otago

Purpose

Join a team of Social Impact Leads who are coming together to connect with their community, build practical skills, and lead with purpose. This role is all about creating meaningful experiences, growing your confidence, and making a real impact, on campus and beyond. Whether you're keen to host events, spark conversations, or just bring good humans together, this is your chance to do mahi that matters.

You’ll get to flex your creativity and develop soft skills like communication, teamwork, and initiative, the kind that stick with you long after uni. It’s a chance to be part of something bigger, and to help others find their place in it too.

Description

As a Social Impact Lead, you’ll be part of a crew of students who care about community, connection, and creating good vibes on campus. You’ll help run events, spark conversations, and support other students to get involved in mahi that matters, whether that’s planting trees, hosting speaker nights, or teaming up with local organisations.

There are heaps of ways to lead, and you’ll get to choose what fits you best. You might be welcoming students to a Good Deed and Feed, helping run the Global Citizens Café, coordinating a buddy programme like Minds Together, or diving into something new with your own creative twist. It’s all about learning by doing, growing your confidence, and making a difference.

Leads opportunities in 2026:

  • 2 Leads for Minds Together - Coordinate a buddy programme with Alzheimer’s Otago for people with early-stage dementia. You’ll recruit and train student buddies, liaise with partners, and help run the sessions.

  • 2 Leads for Reading Oasis - Share the joy of reading with tamariki. You’ll uffie and support the volunteer teams on-site during our programme and help with the rostering for this heartwarming literacy programme.

  • 3 Leads for Be A Mate - Plan and host one-off volunteering events in partnership with local community organisations, usually in smaller groups (think 7 - 10 people) where students can do something meaningful, meet new people and make new friends.

  • 2 Leads for Good deed and Feed - Plan and host one-off volunteering events, think planting days, beach clean-ups, and shared kai. You’ll help welcome students, guide the mahi, and keep the energy high.

  • 3 Leads for GC Café - Host speaker events focused on global issues and perspectives. You'll help shape the vibe, invite speakers, and create a welcoming space for kōrero.

  • Multiple Leads for On Purpose (Speaker Event) - Help plan and deliver our annual speaker event celebrating social impact legends. We’re looking for organisers, interviewers, and event hosts to bring the night to life.

Requirements

We’re looking for students who:

  • Care about people and community.

  • Are keen to grow their leadership and hosting skills.

  • Can bring energy, empathy, and curiosity to the table.

  • Are up for learning, collaborating, and trying new things.

  • Want to help others feel welcome and included.

You don’t need to have heaps of experience, just a willingness to give it a go. Whether you’re a natural host or a quiet connector, there’s space for you here.

Time commitment

This is a year-long volunteer role, starting in early 2026. You’ll be part of a team, so the time commitment is flexible and shared — most Leads contribute a few hours a week, with some busier moments around events. We’ll support you to balance this with your studies and other commitments.

How to apply

Applications officially open toward the end of Semester 2 in 2025, but you can express your interest now!
