What is Reading Oasis?

Reading Oasis is a volunteer programme that brings the magic of books to life for tamariki in Years 1–3 at a local Dunedin school. Partnering with Catalytic Foundation, this initiative gives University of Otago students the chance to step outside the lecture theatre and into a world of imagination—reading, laughing, and connecting with young minds.

Each week, a van full of student volunteers heads out from campus to read with kids, helping to create joyful, welcoming spaces where stories spark curiosity and confidence.

Why join?

If you believe in the power of stories, love spending time with kids, and want to make a small difference that leaves a lasting impact—this is for you.

Requirements

  • A clear reading voice and English fluency

  • A love of reading

  • Ability to maintain personal boundaries and act in a responsible manner

  • Belief in the potential of young people

  • A reliable, caring presence

  • Able to ask for help when needed

  • Openness to different perspectives

  • Commitment to showing up for the tamariki each session

Please note: A background check via the Proctor’s Office is required for this role.

Time commitment

The time commitment is about 6-8 hours total over a semester.

Dates: Specific dates can be found in the volunteer application form below.

Reading Oasis has two streams:

  • 11:15 AM -12:45 PM Tuesdays or Thursdays (includes 15 mins either side for travel).

  • We use a rotating roster, so you'll likely only go once a fortnight on average, but if there is an absence, we may call on you for back-up!

  • We ask that you commit to all your rostered days. If you can’t make the training day, or 2 or more of the sessions, you may not be eligible to continue with the programme.
